OUR VALUES

The mission of WtERT is to identify and advance the best available waste-to-energy (WTE) technologies for the recovery of energy or fuels from municipal solid wastes and other industrial, agricultural, and forestry residues.

Conducts extensive academic research on all aspects of technologies of managing solid waste and disseminates this information by means of its publications, the WtERT web, and annual meetings.

The objectives of the GWC member organizations is to increase resource recovery from used products and minimize the environmental impacts of waste disposal, worldwide.

The guiding principle of GWC is that the sustainable management of wastes must be based on science and best available technology and not what seems to be inexpensive now but can be very costly in the near future.

Status of Energy and Materials recovery from MSW in the USA

The total generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 2018 was 292.4 million tons or 4.9 pounds per person per day.
69 million tons were recycled and 25 million tons were composted (32.1%)
17.7 million tons of food were managed by other methods. (animal feed, bio-based materials/biochemical processing, co-digestion/anaerobic digestion, donation, land application and sewer/wastewater treatment).
35 million tons of MSW (11.8%) were combusted with energy recovery and more than 146 million tons of MSW (50%) were landfilled.
